I’m gonna miss my sister.

I got lucky yesterday. The first thing on my schedule when I got home from this visit with my sister and my family was garden work.

My friend and I worked hard for 3 1/2 hours in my garden. I got to use my body to create an environment for light, nourishment, and beauty to flourish.

Pak choi, kale, other greens, and a barely hanging on snap peas vine in my planter

How wonderful to be a human making plans. What glorious folly.

It wasn’t until I got back into the kitchen to feed myself that thoughts of my sister filled me again. As I prepped the little potatoes and the brussels sprouts and started to caramelize them I could feel my sister right next to me, and imagine her hands making food-love magic with me.

I’m gonna miss my sister a lot. It’s a tossup what I’ll miss most: cooking with her; carving her turkeys (thanks for letting me be the family carver); cooking for her— grilling local asparagus, reducing balsamic vinegar, creating frittatas…

Maybe even more than the food, I’m gonna miss playing games.
